Riwaka hops
Considered one of the favorite hops of the New Zealand Craft-Beer scene, Riwaka is a triploid variety whose mother strain is Saaz. Riwaka is an aromatic hop that is generally only used in end-of-boil, off-flame or Dry Hop additions.
Aromatic profile of Riwaka hops:
Aromatic descriptors for Riwaka hops include passion fruit combined with grapefruit and citrus notes. The Saaz parent variety gives it a subtle floral touch.
This hop combines the aromatic expression typical of New Zealand hops with the very noble side of Saaz.
Composition:
- Alpha acids: 4.5%-6.5
- Beta acids: 4.0%-5.0%
- Cohumulone: 29%-36%.
Oil content (ml/100g): 0.8-1.5 - composed of :
- Myrcene: 67%-70%
- Caryophyllene: 2.0%-6.0
- Farnesene : 0.0%-1.0%
- Humulene: 8.0-10
- Selinene : 17.9%
Favorite beer styles :
Riwaka hops deserve to be highlighted. So don't hesitate to use it in very hoppy styles, IPA or Hazy IPA: treat yourself. Of course, it's equally at home in lighter styles such as pale ale, or even in a good lager.
Possible substitutes :
Because Riwaka hops are unique, it's difficult to substitute them with just one variety. We therefore recommend a 50/50 blend of Saaz-Citra or Saaz-Motueka.
