1. How does a Camlock fitting work?

The Camlock principle relies on two complementary physical elements that lock together without any threading:

  • The Male part (the Adapter or “Plug”): A smooth insert with a groove running around its outer contour.
  • The Female part (the Coupler): A socket equipped with a flat sealing gasket at the bottom and two side levers (the “cams”).

The motion is incredibly simple: you insert the male part into the female part, then fold both levers of the female part downward. As they pivot, the levers engage into the groove of the male part, pushing it firmly against the internal sealing gasket. It’s locked, airtight and ultra‑secure!


2. The Camlock dictionary: Understanding Types (A, B, C, D, E, F)

This is usually where things get tricky for brewers. Camlock fittings are designated by letters from A to F. Each letter corresponds to a precise combination of the fitting’s gender (male or female) and its connection end (male thread, female thread, or barbed hose tail).

To make things easier, we can divide them into two families:


Male ends (Adapters)

  • Type A: Male Camlock with a female thread (usually 1/2" or 1" BSP). Ideal for screwing onto the male threaded outlet of a kettle valve.
  • Type F: Male Camlock with a male thread (usually 1/2" BSP). Perfect for screwing into the female threaded inlet/outlet of a transfer pump.
  • Type E: Male Camlock with a barbed hose tail. Designed to be inserted and clamped directly inside a flexible hose using a hose clamp.

  • Type D: Female coupler with a female thread (usually 1/2" BSP).
