In a brewery, whether it’s set up in a kitchen or in a professional workspace, hoses are the arteries of your system. They carry sparge water, boiling wort, fermenting beer, or pressurized CO₂.

Choosing the wrong hose can alter the flavor of your beer (plastic taste caused by heat), create leaks under pressure, or be impossible to clean.

1. The different types of hoses and their uses

To make the right choice, you must first understand that there is no such thing as a “universal hose.” Each material responds to specific constraints of temperature, pressure, and flexibility:


A. Silicone hose: The ultra‑versatile option (Hot & Cold)

This is the essential hose for any homebrewer. Very flexible, translucent, and extremely resistant, it tolerates temperatures from –40°C to over 200°C.

  • Best use: Ideal for all non‑pressurized liquid transfers: from the mash tun to the boil kettle, or for transferring hot wort to the chiller.
  • Advantages: Perfect food‑grade quality, no off‑flavors, extreme heat resistance, and doesn’t kink easily.
  • Limitations: It cannot withstand pressure (it expands) and is not oxygen‑barrier (avoid for long storage or serving).


B. Reinforced PVC hose: Post‑fermentation transfers

Food‑grade PVC reinforced with a polyester braid is a classic for transfers at moderate or low temperatures.

  • Best use: Perfect for cold water transport and cold beer transfer after fermentation (from fermenter outlet or to priming/bottling vessels).
  • Advantages: Very economical, transparent (lets you see beer clarity and air bubbles), and resistant to moderate pressure thanks to its reinforcement.
  • Limitations: Rigid when cold and sensitive to heat (do not use above 60°C or it may soften and release unwanted compounds).


C. Beer and gas line tubing (EVA Barrier and John Guest)

For pressurized service (kegerator, draft system) and CO₂ handling, specific semi‑rigid small‑diameter tubing is used (often 3/8" or 5/16").

  • Best use: Connecting your Soda Keg‑type kegs to your taps or CO₂ regulators.
  • Advantages: EVA Barrier tubing features a dual‑layer technology highly resistant to gas permeation. It prevents oxygen from entering (avoiding beer oxidation in the line) and preserves carbonation.
  • Limitations: Very rigid, used exclusively with Push‑Fit (John Guest) quick‑connect fittings, and cannot handle hot wort.


D. Insulated hoses: Glycol and high‑performance applications

These hoses include an external thermal insulation layer (often elastomeric foam).

  • Best use: Essential for connecting a glycol chiller to the cooling jackets of temperature‑controlled fermenters. Also suitable for securing very high‑temperature transfer lines by reducing thermal loss and burn risk.
  • Advantages: Prevents ice or water condensation along cold lines and maintains the temperature of the coolant fluid.


2. How to choose the right hose diameter?

The inner diameter of your hose determines liquid flow rate and the physical resistance of your circuit:

  • Standard transfer diameter (12 mm or 1/2"): The standard size for wort transfer by gravity or with a small brewing pump. It offers an excellent balance between fast flow and easy handling.
  • Service diameter (small diameters from 6.35 mm to 9.5 mm): For beer dispensing, very small diameters are intentionally used. Why? To create physical restriction (pressure drop) that slows down the flow of carbonated beer from keg to glass, preventing a glass full of foam.

Beware of oxygen exposure! If you transfer finished beer (post‑fermentation) for bottling or kegging, avoid standard silicone hoses. Although food‑grade, they are microscopically permeable to oxygen. Sending cold beer through a long silicone hose exposes it to passive micro‑oxidation, accelerating aging and destroying hop freshness. For this crucial step, always prefer reinforced PVC or, even better, EVA Barrier tubing.
