Choosing the right temperature‑control system is a key step in brewing great beer, but one fundamental question quickly arises: is my current fermenter compatible with the control equipment I’m aiming for?
Whether it’s a matter of physical dimensions to fit inside a fermentation chamber, or connection compatibility to circulate a chilled coolant, every piece of equipment has its own rules.

1. Mobile systems (Inkbird and heating mats): Universal compatibility
If you’re using a classic temperature controller (such as an Inkbird), compatibility is virtually universal. The probe can be taped and insulated against the outer wall of any vessel, or inserted into a thermowell.
For beginner brewers using standard 12‑liter or 30‑liter plastic buckets, the temperature‑maintenance pack (see product carousel) is the ideal solution. Simply drill the plastic lid of your bucket to insert the supplied thermowell, and wrap the vessel with the included heating mat. It’s the most accessible system for stabilising warm fermentations (Ales) in winter.
2. The modular fermentation chamber: The Ferminator
The Ferminator (Basic and Connect versions) is widely praised for its incredible modularity. Made from insulating expanded polymer, its height can be increased at will using stackable extension modules. The fixed internal width (436 mm x 436 mm) is what determines compatibility with your fermenters. Vessels that are too wide (such as BrewBuilt models) won’t fit, while more slender designs fit perfectly.

- Without extension (internal height 531 mm): Perfect for a 30L graduated fermentation bucket or a pressurisable King Junior fermenter.

- With 2 extensions (internal height 971 mm): Ideal for a FermZilla 27L, a FermZilla Allrounder 60L, a Conicus 30L, or up to 4 × 19L Soda Kegs.
- With 3 extensions (internal height 1191 mm): Can accommodate very large vessels such as the FermZilla 55L or the Conicus Pro 55L.
3. The pro fermentation chamber: The RAPT system
The RAPT fermentation chamber is essentially a true professional‑grade, smart, connected refrigerator. Unlike the Ferminator, its external structure is not modular, but its internal volume offers generous height and allows the addition of removable shelves to optimise space.
It is compatible with any fermenter or group of fermenters that fit within the maximum internal dimensions of 440 mm x 500 mm x 1300 mm (W × D × H). Its capacity is impressive and highly versatile:
- You can install two FermZilla Allrounder 30L fermenters simultaneously by placing a shelf in the middle.
- For keg enthusiasts, this unit can hold up to 4 × 19L Soda Kegs on the floor, with enough vertical space left to stack a second layer of 9.5L kegs.
4. Glycol chilling systems: Compatibility through connections
Glycol cooling shifts the technical power outside the fermenter. Here, compatibility no longer depends on the size of a fridge, but on the fermenter’s ability to receive circulating chilled liquid. Two categories of compatible vessels exist:
Jacketed fermenters (double‑wall)
This is the pinnacle of engineering. High‑end fermenters (such as certain Brewtools models, all BrewBuilt tanks, or the Brewmonk U Collection) feature a structural insulated double wall. Equipped with dedicated Tri‑Clamp (TC) cooling ports, they allow direct connection of glycol hoses. The coolant circulates across the entire external surface of the stainless‑steel tank, dropping the temperature extremely quickly without ever contacting the beer.
Fermenters with immersion coils
If your stainless‑steel fermenter does not have a double wall, it remains fully glycol‑compatible thanks to a removable accessory. Large‑diameter Tri‑Clamp top lids (typically TC 4") are available with an integrated stainless‑steel cooling coil (e.g., 521 mm). The coil plunges directly into the wort, and the two upper ports allow you to connect your glycol lines to chill the beer from the inside with excellent efficiency.
