Barrel - 6L

Aging your beer in a barrel is no longer exclusive to professionals! Develop and refine your best potions in the style of 3 Fonteinen, Malpolon or even La Montagnarde…

This barrel of oak is made with the same method as the traditional barrels and casks of wines and spirits used by the great Bordeaux and Burgundy houses.

The oak used for this barrel of 6L is naturally dried. It is then polished to guarantee a uniform surface and a beautiful resistance between the staves. Finally, the stave is tapered so that it is wider in the center and narrower on the sides.

This non-heat-treated fut gives woody, vanilla aromas to the beverage you choose to age.

Ideal use:

If this barrel is perfect for aging brett beers, spontaneous, Quadrupel or Imperial Stout, it will not be limited to this use.

It will be perfect for the maturation and refining of your white rum, arranged rum, cider, plant-based spirits (Gin, Tequila), grain alcohol (Whisky, Vodka), grape brandy (Cognac, Armagnac) and of course, your wine.

To facilitate maintenance and storage, this barrel is waxed with paraffin. This interior waxing maximizes the seal and limits the effect of woodiness. This is a good thing on a new 6 L barrel.

Indeed, raw and untreated barrels produce woody aromas that are difficult to control. It usually takes many years to achieve a satisfactory balance. The application of wax allows better control of flavors and makes the process of aging in barrels accessible to amateur brewers.

Before first use:

  1. Insert the provided tap into the hole provided for this purpose and make sure it is well fixed.
  2. Fill the barrel halfway (approximately) with boiling water mixed with salt (15/20g per liter).
  3. Close the barrel and shake it well so that the entire interior is moistened.
  4. Let it rest for at least two days and shake it twice a day.
  5. Empty the barrel, rinse it thoroughly and let it dry.
  6. Fill the barrel with heated white wine and keep it always full for 10 days (you will need to check and sometimes fill, as the wood can absorb up to 10% of the liquid. After this operation, it will only absorb 2% of the liquid you choose to age).
  7. Finally, empty the barrel without rinsing it and let it dry.
  8. You can now age the drink of your choice in this magnificent 6L barrel!

Storage of the empty barrel:

If you do not use the barrel for several weeks, you must wrap it in plastic film and place it in a room with:

  • - good humidity (75%-80% - in itself a room not too dry, not too humid)
  • - no drafts
  • - little light
  • - little temperature variation
  • - cover the barrel with a cloth and avoid UV rays.

Bonus Info:

We tested this little barrel! While the provided stopper will do its job very well, we find that a conical cork stopper would be better suited.

It will maximize the barrel's seal. Moreover, when you take your samples to taste your beer, the cork allows you to insert a syringe (with needle). This will minimize oxygen exposure.

The ideal size for the stopper is 15-18mm.
