1. Filtering the Malt: Extracting Sugar from the Grains

Right after mashing, the goal is to collect the clearest wort possible while leaving the grain husks behind. Two main equipment philosophies coexist:

  • Brewing bags (BIAB): The BIAB brewing bag acts as a filter by itself. It’s the most accessible method for beginners since the grain stays contained in the fabric. When lifting the bag, the wort naturally drains through the mesh. It’s simple, but requires physical effort when removing the bag soaked with liquid.
  • The false bottom: The king of traditional breweries. The perforated stainless‑steel false bottom sits at the bottom of your mash tun or lauter bucket. By covering the entire surface, it allows the grain bed to settle evenly on top. The malt husks themselves then act as a natural filter bed during recirculation, providing exceptional wort clarity.

Automatic systems: In all‑in‑one electric systems (such as Brewzilla or Brew Monk), the removable stainless‑steel grain basket plays the same mechanical role as a rigid brewing bag. It holds the grains while allowing the wort to circulate freely.


2. Filtering the Hops: Protecting Pumps and Clarifying the Beer

After the boil, the wort is hot and full of hop debris (whether disintegrated pellets or infused cones). It is crucial to trap this plant material before chilling to avoid grassy off‑flavors in the fermenter and to prevent clogging plate chillers or transfer pumps.

  • The Bazooka filter: The Bazooka filter is a long stainless‑steel mesh tube that screws directly onto the inside of your kettle valve. It is excellent at blocking coarse debris and hop cones during transfer. However, be cautious with pellets: if you use a very large amount without additional protection, the fine mesh can sometimes clog due to hot break and hop resin.
  • Hop bags: The best preventive solution is to use a hop bag or hop sock (fabric or muslin) directly during the boil. By placing your pellets or cones inside from the start, essential oils and bitterness diffuse perfectly through the mesh while all plant material remains trapped. At the end of the boil, simply remove the bag—your kettle stays perfectly clean.

Tip for automatic kettles: If you brew with an electric kettle equipped with a pump, using a Hop Spider (a large stainless‑steel filter basket suspended on the kettle rim) is particularly effective. It allows you to add large amounts of loose pellets during the boil while protecting the recirculation pump 100% from clogging.
