In homebrewing, several hop formats exist. While whole cones remain the traditional image of the brewer, technological innovation has introduced more efficient, more concentrated and easier‑to‑use formats. At Rolling Beers, we help you choose the format best suited to your equipment and your goals.

Rolling Beers technical comparison of hop formats: whole cones, standard T90 pellets, concentrated lupulin Cryo and liquid extract Spectrum. Evolution from tradition to innovation to maximize yield and aroma.

1. Hop Pellets: The modern standard

Pellets are produced by grinding and compressing dried hop cones. Today, this is the most widely used format among both homebrewers and professionals.

  • Storage: Their compact form prevents oxygen penetration, offering excellent stability of alpha acids and oils.
  • Extraction: As they fully disintegrate, they provide maximum contact surface for optimal aroma release.
  • Simplicity: Very compact, they take up little freezer space. At the end of the boil, a simple whirlpool separates them from the wort.

2. Whole Cone Hops: Tradition

This is simply the dried hop flower. It is the rawest form of the product.

  • Practical use: Very convenient if you use a hop sock or a hop spider, as the cones remain trapped in the mesh.
  • Technical drawback: Cones require a lot of storage space. Most importantly, they absorb a large amount of wort, significantly reducing your final beer volume.

3. Cryo and Spectrum Hops: Technology serving flavour

For demanding brewers, new formats push aromatic intensity even further:

  • Cryo Hops: A concentrated lupulin pellet. It offers twice the aromatic power of a classic pellet without the excessive “grassy” character.
  • Spectrum liquid extract: The ultimate format for dry hopping. Fully soluble, it causes zero beer loss.

⚠️ The 80/20 golden rule: Although extremely effective, Cryo and Spectrum lack vegetal matter. Using them at 100% can lead to a loss of texture and body. For perfect balance between explosive aroma and structure, we recommend a ratio of 80% Cryo/Spectrum to 20% standard pellets (T90).

Rolling Beers Team Advice

If you’re just starting out, pellets are your best ally. For brewers looking to optimize their yield (more beer in the bottle!), switch to Cryo or Spectrum for your dry hopping. Always store solid hop formats in the freezer to prevent alpha acid degradation. Need help with dosage equivalence? Our brewing experts are here to help.
