Galena

Galena was developed in 1968 in the state of Idaho, where it was selected by the USDA.

It is the result of a cross between Brewer’s Gold and a wild American hop, designed to offer a high-alpha variety that is disease-resistant and well-suited to large-scale cultivation.

Released commercially in 1978, it quickly became one of the first major multipurpose hops in the United States and remains a key reference for brewers worldwide.

Galena offers a complex aromatic profile:

• - Fruity: notes of blackcurrant, grapefruit, and red berries.
• - Spicy: subtle hints of pepper and nutmeg.
• - Herbal: earthy and herbal nuances typical of character hops.

Galena performs well in various brewing applications:

• - As a bittering hop: used early in the boil, it delivers a clean and assertive bitterness.

• - As an aroma hop: added late in the boil or in dry hopping, it reveals its fruity and spicy character.

• - In combination: pairs well with hops like Cascade (for floral and citrus notes), Brewers Gold (adds fruity and resinous complexity), or Chinook (enhances bitterness and adds spicy depth).
