The beer tap (or draft faucet) is the final contact point between your beer and the customer’s glass.
Beyond the aesthetics of the bar counter, choosing a tap depends on strict mechanical criteria. Thread compatibility with towers (US vs EU standards), internal sealing mechanism, and flow control: selecting the right model prevents leaks, excessive foaming, and blockages during service.

1. US Standard vs EU Standard: Understanding connection threads
This is the number one cause of incompatibility when assembling a draft line: European and American threads are not interchangeable without an adapter.
- European Standard (5/8" BSP or M18 Thread): This is the universal standard on European countertop dispensers (Lindr, Pygmy, Celli, European kegerators). The tap shank (wall-through fitting) is usually threaded in 5/8" BSP or M18x1.5 and screws directly onto the back of the tower or through the body of the dispenser.
- American Standard (1-1/8"-18 UNEF Thread): Very common on modern equipment and craft breweries (taps such as Nukatap, Intertap, Perlick). The tap body has a toothed collar (spline) and screws onto a US shank via a standard coupling nut.
Good to know: US tap handles use a standardized 3/8"-16 UNC thread, allowing easy customization of your tap handles.
2. Internal anatomy: Forward-Sealing vs Rear-Sealing
The way the tap closes internally has a direct impact on hygiene and service smoothness:
- Rear-Sealing taps (Traditional): The valve seals the beer passage at the back of the tap body. Residual beer remains trapped inside the spout, exposed to ambient air. If the tap is not used for 24–48 hours, the beer dries, the mechanism sticks, and wild yeast or bacteria can develop.
- Forward-Sealing taps (e.g., Nukatap type): The closure occurs at the very front of the spout via a shuttle or sealing ball. Beer does not stagnate inside the tap body, preventing clogging, greatly reducing infection risk, and ensuring smooth operation from the first pour of the day.
3. The importance of the compensator tap (Flow Control)
In craft brewing, CO2 saturation (carbonation) can vary from one beer style to another. A compensator tap integrates an internal adjustable cone controlled by a small side lever:
- It allows manual adjustment of restriction (resistance) inside the spout.
- You can fine-tune the flow rate in real time according to keg pressure to eliminate foam during keg changes or summer heat spikes.
4. Comparison table: Standards and features of beer taps
| Type / Standard | Mounting Thread | Sealing Technology | Recommended Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| EU Compensator Tap | 5/8" BSP or M18 (Long Thread) | Rear-Sealing / Compensator piston | Mobile countertop dispensers (Lindr), traditional European bar towers. |
| US Nukatap / Intertap Tap | 1-1/8"-18 UNEF (US Collar) | Forward-Sealing (Nukatap shuttle) | Kegerators, craft bar counters, maximum hygiene and reduced waste. |
| Nukatap Flow Control Tap | 1-1/8"-18 UNEF (US Collar) | Forward-Sealing + Flow compensator | The perfect combo: impeccable Forward-Sealing hygiene and universal anti-foam control. |
The opinion of the Rolling Beers technical team
Want to mount a US tap on an EU dispenser? Think adapter! If you have a dispenser or tower built to European standards (5/8" BSP thread) and want to install a modern forward-sealing tap such as Nukatap (US standard), there are 5/8" BSP to US collar thread adapters available. This lets you modernize your tap setup without replacing your towers or cooling units!
