The Wakatu hop, formerly named Hallertau Aroma, is a triploid hop from New Zealand. It was marketed in 1988 and renamed Wakatu in 2011. It is the result of a cross between the Hallertauer Mittelfrüher hop and a New Zealand male.
The Wakatu hop provides a soft bitterness and floral aromas, fresh and tangy lime. It is considered a dual-purpose hop that can be used throughout the boil, flame out and dry hopping. In addition, the Wakatu hop has a high beta acid rate ensuring exceptional flavor retention in beer.
It is often used for Lager, Pale Ale, Pilsner and Belgian Ale style beers.
