BarthHaas is the world market leader in hops. This century-old German company is a pioneer in new technologies and hop research. BarthHaas offers raw materials of exceptional quality and is constantly innovating in its field.

BarthHaas: a multi-centenary company

Founded by Georg Barth, this very old German company based in Nuremberg dates back to 1794. It was established and has endured thanks (initially) to its ability to preserve hops and its knowledge of the agricultural hop market.

When Georg's sons took over, the company supplied 400 breweries. In 1868, the company opened up to the world market for the first time, shipping its first shipment to New York.

Nuremberg being something of the "Wall Street" of the hop market, the company remained market leader until the First World War. It wasn't until the 1950s that the company began to rebuild.

Expansion of BarthHaas

At the end of the 1970s, the company then known as Joh. Barth & Sohn opened up once again to the world hop market. It bought the John I Haas company based in the Yakima Valley in the USA. Hop fans know that this valley is known for its gigantic fields and production. The modern foundations of BarthHaas thus laid, the company continued to grow until the early 90s. Over the years, it acquired a lot of hop-growing land, particularly in Australia (home of Vic secret, Galaxy and Enigma).

The 90s were a difficult decade for the global hop market. Rather than concentrating on sales, BarthHaas invested mainly in research institutes and developed new technologies. So, when demand for hops finally boomed around 2006, BarthHaas was ready and able to offer a raw material of exceptional quality. The company thus acquired a reputation as a pioneer in new developments and consolidated its position as market leader.

The Barth Haas Group recently launched a training program in the sensory and chemical aspects of hops. Professionals graduating from this program are involved in perfecting product selection and quality. 

The manufacturer places great emphasis on the quality of its products, and works very closely with growers. All batches are meticulously analyzed in the laboratory to ensure that there are no pesticide residues (above standards). What's more, all hops are traceable, and every retailer can find out (on request) which farm produced the batch they have in store.
