The Barbe Rouge hops is a French aromatic variety. It was developed as part of the varietal research program in Alsace. It is a direct descendant of Strisselspalt.
The Barbe Rouge hops provides an elegant and not very persistent bitterness, as well as fruity, spicy, herbaceous and slightly citrusy aromas. Used at the end of boiling, Whirlpool or Dry Hop, it will mainly bring notes of red fruits, kumquat, orange, lime, currant, strawberry and raspberry.
It is often used for Belgian-style beers, such as ales, bières de garde, saisons, as well as blonde lagers, pale ales, pils, weissbier and wheat ales. The most adventurous can even try it on an India Pale Lager.
