Often referred to as Epsom/epson salt (or Epsom Salt) in brewing software or applications. Magnesium sulfate (MgSO4) provides one molecule of magnesium for every 4 of sulfate. This will primarily increase sulfate and secondarily magnesium.

This brewing salt is particularly well-suited to beers with a dry, bitter texture, while increasing the magnesium by a hair's breadth. As a general rule, we recommend dosing magnesium sulfate at 2g per 25L. In reality, it all depends on what you want to correct in your brewing water. For information: Adding 1 gram of magnesium sulfate to 10 liters of water increases the amount of sulfate by 39 ppm and the amount of magnesium by 10 ppm.

Other roles of magnesium sulfate

• Enhances bitterness perceived in hoppy beers
• Helps lower pH during mashing
• Increases water acidity

Bonus information:

The ideal sulfate level is :

• Between 10 and 50 mg/L for beers where too much bitterness is not necessarily desired
• Between 100 and 130 mg/L for the most bitter beers.
