Calluna vulgaris L.

Flowers from heather plants. They give a bitter flavour if they are boiled for a long time and, for this reason, were used in some areas before hops made their entrance. If you rather want the fairly sweet aroma of heather flowers in your beer, add them at the end of the boil.
