Electric Brewing Kettle Guide
Gas kettle or electric kettle?
To heat the wort during the mashing and boiling stages, brewers have several options: heating a stainless steel pot on a gas burner or using a thermostatically controlled electric kettle. Each method has its pros and cons. Gas heating offers the freedom to brew anywhere, even in places without electricity (like a garden or outdoor space). However, brewing with gas indoors is not recommended. Conversely, electric kettles allow indoor brewing and offer more precise temperature control, especially during mashing. Typically equipped with a thermostat, these kettles allow for accurate brewing and maintaining temperatures for extended periods—an extremely convenient feature.
In this category, we’re primarily interested in electric kettles.
Electric Brewing Kettle
Electric kettles can be divided into two categories. On one side, you have the classic electric stainless steel brewing kettle, and on the other, the automatic brewing kettle.
Your choice will depend on how you want to brew and your budget.
Standard Electric Brewing Kettle
This type of electric brewing kettle is ideal for beginners. It’s affordable, can hold around 30 liters (perfect for 20L batches), and all models come with a thermostat. All you need is a fermentation bucket, a few basic tools, a brew bag, and you're ready to make your own beer! An electric stainless steel kettle is especially great for experimenting with the brew-in-a-bag method, which works well for any beer style. Another advantage of the standard electric brewing kettle is that if you later decide to upgrade to an automatic brewing system, it can still serve as a sparge water heater. It will accompany you through a good part of your homebrewing journey!
Automatic Brewing Kettle
With automatic brewing kettles, you're stepping up your game. They are more expensive, but they offer:
- High quality
- Great convenience
- Typically a 3-year warranty*
The major advantage of an electric brewing kettle is that it includes a pump, ensuring optimal temperature consistency throughout the entire volume of water and grain. This significantly improves sugar extraction efficiency.
Additionally, the heating system in this type of kettle is highly efficient, allowing you to reach your mash steps and boiling point much faster—saving you a lot of time.
While Brew Monk and Grainfather have long been the leaders, other equally capable models are now available, ranging from 30 to 100 liters and for all budgets. Among our favorite brands, discover:
